Grandpa Solomon Saxton’s Faith and Spirituality
By Florence A R Saxton
A very sensitive, spiritual man was Grandpa Solomon Saxton.  Coming from England and then to Coalville, Utah they left much behind for the gospel’s sake.
They, he and Matilda Dexter Saxton, lived in a cave in the hill in Upton when they first went there.  His daughter and her husband lived just around the hill and
up the road about a quarter of a mile. One night Grandpa got up and was dressing when Grandma said, “Sol, where are you going?
“They are coming for me, Sarah is sick”, he replied.  Almost before his answer was spoken he heard the sound of a horse coming.  It was Uncle Will Staley
coming for Grandpa, who accompanied him home and gave Aunt Sarah a blessing and she was made well by the power of the Priesthood.  He then returned
home.Another time when Uncle Elmer Saxton was a little boy, he got hurt and Grandma Annie did all she could for him.  As she wondered what more to do for
him she looked out the window and saw Grandpa Solomon coming and said to Elmer, “here comes Grandpa, you will soon be well again.”  After a Priesthood
blessing he was well and lived to be over eighty years of age.

SOLOMON SAXTON DEAD
An Aged Pioneer of Coalville-End of A Useful Life

Coalville - Feb. 19 - Solomon Saxton, a pioneer in this part of the country, died here this morning about 8 o'clock, after suffering some three weeks from a
severe cold, which is thought terminated in pneumonia. He suffered greatly just previous to his death, and morphine had to be injected to ease the pain. Had he
lived until Friday he would have been 78 year of age. Father Saxton has been a prominent man in this section for many years, and with all his acquaintances he
was held in the highest esteem. He was quiet and unassuming and everybody learned to love and respect him, and many will mourn his death, not withstanding
he had lived to a good old age and his life had been spent in usefulness. Solomon Saxton was born in Old Benzley, Nottingham, England, February 21, 1824. He
was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints on June 27, 1847 by Elder William Bartley. (family records show he was baptized June
21, 1845) On the 21 Day of March 18*7 he left his native land for America. He remained in the state of Illinois for four years and crossed the plains with ox
team in the year 1861 arriving in Coalville on September ** the same year. He lived here for two years and in the spring of 1863 moved to Upton where he
made his home until 18*8 when he moved back to Coalville. On the 26th day of October 18** he was married to Matilda Dexter by whom he had ten children,
four boys and six girls, five of whom are living. He had twenty nine grandchildren. The remains will be interred at Upton on Friday.
